At least 30,000 Jews migrated to North Africa after the fall of the Second Temple in Jerusalem 🕍indicating Jews have been present in Morocco for at least 2,000 years. Jewish presence in the area dates back at least 2,500 years, and maybe far further. Two oil lamps in the shape of menorahs, dating back to the third century, were discovered at the site of Volubilis, a former Roman city in the southwestern corner of the Empire, presently near the city of Fez. Several Jewish gravestones were discovered, including one that referred to the synagogue's leader and was written in both Hebrew and Greek.
