Pride didn’t start as a celebration. It began with a protest.
It all goes back to June 28, 1969, when police raided a gay club called the Stonewall Inn in New York. Though the police claimed the bar was operating with an improper liquor license, the raid was about nothing more than harassing and arresting LGBTQIA+ people in one of the few places where they felt safe. The first Pride parade took place 1 year later.
Fast forward half a century — and (as you can tell by our team’s answers) Pride now means a little something different to everyone. Whether you are celebrating Pride with a party, parade, or protest, we hope you stay safe, show your support, and educate others about the importance of this historical day. 🌈✊🏼
