The casting process for this movie was particularly complicated: Gere beat all the other actors for the part (Jeff Bridges, Harry Hamlin, Christopher Reeve), with John Travolta turning down the role, as he did with "American Gigolo" - a true friend, I'd say! 🤷♂️
Debra Winger was a sort of last-minute choice: the role was originally given to Sigourney Weaver, then to Anjelica Huston and later to Jennifer Jason Leigh.
The film was released exactly 40 years ago becoming an enormous box office success.
Louis Gossett Jr. won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for the film, making him the first black male to do so.
"Up Where We Belong", the song written by Jack Nitzsche, Buffy Sainte-Marie and Will Jennings and recorded by Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes, won the Academy Award for Best Original Song and reached N.1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US, topping the charts in several other countries.
