Here are three Catshark species; the Chain, Pyjama, and Leopard.
This broud group is referred to as ground sharks in the family Scyliorhinidae and can be distinguished by their elongated, cat-like eyes and two small dorsal fins set further on the back. Most species of catshark are small, growing no longer than 80 cm or 31 in, and live in warm coastal regions all over the world!
As small sharks, they have to be clever when defending themselves from larger predators. Take the Pyjama shark; when one feels threatened, it will roll itself into a "doughnut" to protect its sensitive eyes with the tail and wait for an opportunity to escape if being attacked. With an estimated 170 species in this family alone, there is still so much to learn about these sharks and how they behave.
Illustrations were created using my @wacom Cintiq Pro 16 in Adobe Photoshop. Two of these #scientificillustrations will soon be used for new research on #sharks that I'm excited to share once published!
Enjoy your weekend!
