Hampton Hawes, Four! With Barney Kassel, Shelly Manne and Red Mitchell, Contemporary Records. Released originally in 1958 this set is a mix of originals and standards. Hawes is the star of the show, with his piano sounding wonderful, full, rich and very non-RVG. Thanks, Roy DuNann! I only wish Barney Kessel would have more presence here but overall this is an excellent record. A blind buy for me, and I'm very happy with it.
The pressing is a brand new release in the @craftrecordings Contemporary Records 70th Anniversary Series, mastered by Bernie Grundman. Sounds wonderful.
