The Trifid nebula (also known as Messier 20 or NGC 6514) is an H II region in the constellation Sagittarius. The nebula is divided into three lobes separated by dark lines of dust. Messier 20 is an emission, absorption and reflection nebula, at the same time. At the center of the Trifid nebula is the open cluster Collinder 360 (C1759-230), whose brightest star is HD164492A, a blue giant star of spectral type O. As per the latest measurements, the distance average between the Earth and the stars of the cluster is 4,120 light-years.
NGC 6514 is located 1.3° from the Lagoon nebula (Messier 8). The open cluster, Messier 21, can also be seen at the top left of the image.
