Happy heavenly birthday, Charles Boyer, who was born on this day (August 28) in 1899 in Figeac, France. The French-American actor was known for his romantic dramas. According to Lucy Ricardo, he walked into a room with an expression on his face that he was smelling cauliflower cooking! Charles guest-starred in this episode of “I Love Lucy,” titled “Lucy Meets Charles Boyer.” Things seems to be okay for him until the end of the episode, where he can’t catch a break. It’s hilarious! 😂
.
Some fun facts about this episode: It was originally written with Maurice Chevalier in mind. When it didn’t work out, they used Charles Boyer instead and Chevalier later guest-starred in an episode of “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour,” titled “Lucy Goes to Mexico.” For the final scene in the episode, Boyer didn’t want to wear his own clothes. It was a Desilu practice that guest stars wore their own clothes. He also didn’t want to wear clothing from Desilu’s wardrobe department, so Desi Arnaz eventually gave him one of his own overcoats. Disappearing ink had to be used instead of real ink, and props master Jerry Miggins went to a magic shop to buy a trick pen so the pen would squirt enough ink. The more you know, right?
