Friday Late: Pretty Useless Things
For the first @vamuseum Friday Late of 2022 (and my very first Late) we looked at the role of aesthetics in our modern world to explore how we are perpetually attracted to beautiful things with little use.
Huge thanks to all the amazing artists and practitioners who took part @yarliallison@aditoch_metalwork@dillonmarsh@_keiken_@alicebucknell@sarashakeel@kaiacharles_@nowgalleryse10@__tyson@ladiesmusicpub@charisseec@koeksista@unknownfields@tobysmithphoto@yurisuzukilondon
Image 1: @__tyson performing tracks from her enchanting EP, drift away on a cloud to her dreamy, spellbinding sounds.
Image 2: @welcometotheascension transformed the Grand Entrance into gravitational experiences, combining South African electronic music, ethereal vocal riffs and sound-looping techniques.
Image 3: We were dazzled by this meticulous installation by Pakistani visual artist @sarashakeel - The Great Supper subverts the idea of luxury and turns everyday objects into the subject of a witty dialogue across this dinner table.
Image 4: Curator Livia Turnbull led an inspiring discussion with digital artists @alicebucknell and @_keiken_ who are critically engaging with the emerging market of NFTs, and the opportunities and concerns that come along with it.
Image 5: This visual installation by South African artist @dillonmarsh visualises the output of gold, copper and diamond mines by combining photography and digital rendering.
Image 6: @aditoch_metalwork led this workshop to turn extraordinary metal into stunningly patinated miniature artworks using non-toxic, everyday kitchen cupboard foodstuffs.
Image 7: In this intimate and experimental performative workshop with artist @yarliallison, participants explored the online dilemma of digital cookies in our everyday life: reject or allow?
Image 8: This film by @unknownfields in collaboration with @tobysmithphoto, reveals the human cost of gemstone extraction in Madagascar.
