This summer we need to talk about the concept of “urban heat islands”🔥👀 #browngirlgreen Content support: @goldengreengee Design: @dscochris Urban heat islands are areas where there’s not a lot of trees/ shade/ places to stay out of the hot af heat because there’s so much asphalt / concrete taking up space. Areas like this typically also have higher rates of air pollution, interpersonal conflict, and more due to lack of proper refuge during hot temp months. Growing up in Southern California, many parts of LA/ surrounding regions are full of urban heat islands - with low income communities, people with disabilities, and BIPOC communities bearing the brunt of the impacts. This topic is a public health & environmental justice concern as communities suffer from things like heat strokes, breathing issues etc- and we need to talk about it!
