Jazzvinyl brother @stefanomari8338 posted this one last week and it's been on constant rotation ever since. Miles Davis's "Birth of The Cool" is one of the most legendary and most pivotal albums in jazz, with the credits also going to Gil Evans, John Lewis and Gerry Mulligan, who contributed arrangements for most of the tracks. It is those arrangements that have defined this album as a new direction, opening fresh new sounds and perspectives that would stretch out throughout the 50s. The album compiles eleven tracks recorded by Davis's nonet for the label over the course of three sessions during 1949 and 1950. These are simply stellar sessions, featuring true giants of jazz like Kai Winding, Lee Konitz, Gerry Mulligan, Al Haig, Max Roach, J. J. Johnson, John Lewis, Kenny Clarke, Gunter Schuller and Al McKibbon, to name a few, and they should be a part of any jazz collection, in any format.
