The pagoda was made famous by being the prison of the legendary spirit of Madame White Snake. The sunsets here are supposed to be captivating, hence it being one of the West Lake's sights "Sunset Glow at Leifeng" (雷峰夕照). Less well known is the Jingci Temple on Nanping Hill.
