The Aviator impresses with a coddling ride and a potent standard engine. It doesn’t handle as sharply as many rivals, and the hybrid powertrain – while more powerful than the base engine – can feel unrefined. As a smooth and speedy highway cruiser, though, the Aviator soars. Base engine: twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 with 400 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque (Standard, Reserve, Black Label)
Available powertrain: twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine and a 13.6-kWh lithium-ion battery with a combined 494 horsepower and 630 pound-feet of torque (Grand Touring, Black Label Grand Touring)
Drivetrain: standard rear-wheel drive; available all-wheel drive
Transmission: 10-speed automatic
The EPA hasn’t provided fuel economy estimates for the 2023 Aviator, but the mechanically similar 2022 Aviator earns an EPA-estimated 18 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway when equipped with rear-wheel drive. With all-wheel drive, these figures drop to 17/24 mpg city/highway.
The plug-in-hybrid Grand Touring and Black Label Grand Touring models have an all-electric driving range of about 21 miles on a single charge. The 13.6-kWh lithium-ion battery pack takes between three and four hours to charge using a 240-volt outlet.
